Leadership Development: Becoming A Better Leader

Overview

This eLearning course is part of an ongoing project aimed at mangers and assistant managers to help them develop skills to effectively lead employees to increase employee morale and productivity.

Audience: Newly-hired managers and assistant managers

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development

Tools Used: Articulate Rise 360

Problem

The client I developed this eLearning course for had stated that the most recent survey of employees had low scores around manager leadership. The qualitative feedback revealed that new mangers were being hired or promoted from within with very little experience. The new managers had enthusiasm for their job, but were not well trained in how to lead employee teams effectively. The purpose of the training is to help mangers develop skills to effectively lead employees to increase employee morale and productivity.

Solution

This client was looking for a comprehensive, on-going program for new managers and assistant mangers to receive training after being hired. I proposed an eLearning course, along with a job aid and Instructor Led Training (ILT) course. This way, mangers and assistant mangers could receive training via an independently timed eLearning module in Articulate Rise 360 when first hired, and then engage with each other later on in a small group ILT session to practice leadership simulations and debrief with other managers.

Process

1. Design Document

The design document was key in determining what the course would achieve. Together with the Subject Matter Expert, I developed learning objectives which helped define the overall structure of the course that was laid out in the design document.

2. Interactive Prototype

Since Articulate Rise is so flexible and easy to use, I was able to start development as soon as the design document was approved. The first prototype had the same features as the final product would, but it still needed to be tested with the SMEs for feedback on usability, transitions, content organization, and overall experience.

3. Full Development

After receiving and reviewing feedback from the prototype, I made some modifications to finalize the course. The client and I agreed that having the managers set goals was important, but after seeing it included in the Rise course, we both felt that it would be better suited for the ILT portion of the on-going program. I kept the information on how to set goals in the Rise course so that managers would be better prepared when they took the ILT course, and I added in more quiz questions to ensure the learning objectives were being met. Overall, the switch streamlined the Rise course and the client was satisfied with the outcome.
